Money!:02 [Tokyo2020]

Hello.

Today, I will talk about money handling in Japan.

Now, cashless transactions are becoming common in many countries.
In japan, you can pay credit cards or debit cards at many department stores and supermarkets.
But, especially in the countryside, you can't pay by cards at many shops, restaurants etc.
Yes, cash only.
In Japan, cashless payments are not so advanced.

So, when you arrive in Japan, first, I want you to put some Japanese yen in your purse.
You can change to Japanese yen at the airport, or you can change at ATM.
You can usually withdraw from foreign currency deposits at ATM at convenience stores and post offices.

Also, if you are worried about carrying cash and plan to stay in Japan for more than a week, you may want to have one prepaid transportation card (Suica, Ikoka, etc.).
These cards can be settled in more places than credit cards (such as some vending machines, station stalls, and coin lockers).
Some cards have special cards for foreign visitors.
For details, please contact a train station counter.

Japanese money types include coins of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, and 500 yen, and bills of 1000, 5000, and 10,000 yen.
(There are 2000 yen bills, but they are not in circulation)

And, one more.
In Japan, you don't have to pay tips at restaurants and hotels.

I hope you a happy trip.
Thank you.

Welcome to Japan! :01 [Tokyo2020]

Next year, there will be a lot of foreigners coming to Japan across the sea just like you.
I wish you a happy trip in japan.
I would like to write information that will help you.
But I am not good at English, so please forgive my mistakes.

Japan is a very interesting country.
Japan is close to the latest technology and old traditions.
If you ride a train an hour from a city with buildings, you will be able to go to the countryside like "Japanimation".
However, urban transport is very complex, and there are many maze-like stations.
In Japan, the number of English guidance displays has increased, but not all.

There will be one big problem.

Most Japanese are not good at English like me.
When you talk to Japanese in English, they may run away or grimacing.
You may think that the Japanese are unkind and don't tell you anything.
But in fact, we Japanese don't understand English, so we just don't understand what you are saying.

First of all, please talk very slowly.
Many Japanese can understand if you talk slowly.
If you still don't understand us about your purpose, what should you do?
In such cases, notepads and pens or similar apps are useful.
If you write English words or simple pictures on them, we often understand.
Also, even if we don't understand English speech, we may understand the meaning if you write the same sentence.
If we understand your purpose, we will answer or tell you where someone can answer it.

I ’ll introduce myself a little.
I am Japanese, and I live in countryside in Chiba Prefecture (has Narita International Airport).
My hometown is very old, there are many wonderful buildings with Japanese traditions, and a lot of delicious Japanese food.
I will introduce it in detail on another occasion.
Maybe I am volunteering in Narita City(call "City Cast") or the Tokyo2020 venue("Field Cast").

I hope to meet you in Japan.
